NetVault on Unix?

$

I've been tasked with an interesting task that I wanted to see if someone could point me in the right direction.  I'm doing some research now, but, I've always learned that forum directions (asking those who know more) have always been way better.

That being said, if we can backup a UNIX system, we need to stop the services on the server that aren't pertaining to NetVault, then run the backup, then restart the services.

So, is there a way to run a script as part of the backup that will stop the services and then upon completion, start the services?

Job E-Mail Notification - Information level

Dear comminity,

we are using Job E-Mail Notification in NetVault. Is there a possibility to extend the level of information provided by the E-Mail Notfication Service?

Job completed with warnings isn´t very much. It would be helpful to get information about the warnings in the E-Mail then to need to look inside the Software.

Is that possible?

Kind regards

Virtual class setup

I'm thinking of setting up a class (as per requested by my client) via virtual desktop where:

- every participant has their desktop as vpn access, managed by vmware view desktop

- each participant have their own centos virtual machine provided that will be used as backup server

- there will be a windows virtual machine so the participant can practise backup and restore windows filesystem

what do you think of pros and cons of this kind of setup for netvault backup administration's class?

[Netvault 8.6.1] Pause in pre/post scripts

Hi all...

My Netvault server is a Windows 2k8 R2 and I can't make a pause in my scripts...

I have tried this in a pre-script :

c:

echo toto > C:\toto.txt

time /t  >> C:\toto.txt

timeout /T 120

time /t  >> C:\toto.txt

echo toto2 >> C:\toto.txt

And the timeout doesn't make an error but doesn't work !!

Have you some ideas ?

I just need to run a cmd which has to launch a command and then must wait for around 1 minute before exiting...

Thanks in advance.

Physical Library offline after firmware upgrade on tape library

We have a Quest Scalar i2000 physical tape library.  We upgraded the firmware on it and after all was said and done, everything looked good.  When I jump into our NetVault server, all of the virtual drives look fine, but the physical Scalar library shows "offline", then it shows "unavailable".  After I tried to restart the library, it just showed "offline".  Everything on the hardware side/tape library side looks good according to the vendor.  I'm looking at the NetVault side and wanted to know if I'm missing something.

Thank you in advance.

Netvault SmartDisk Query

HI all,

I'm using Netvault smartdisk for backing up data onto a filesystem on a storage product. I ve mounted the filesystem through CIFS on my Windows machine where Netvault has been installed.

I have to take simulatneous backups on 4 such filesystems.

But to my knowledge, we can make only 1 Smartdisk device using Netvault Device Management . Is it correct?

After adding smartdisk we go to its properties and define pool name. This pool name can also be given only once??

I just want to know is it possible to have 4 smartdisks configured for 4 filesystems?

Or configure 4 devices on 1 smartdisk and run backups on them simultaneously?

NVBU CLI Restore to an Alternate Server

Recently a NetVault Backup user asked us how to use the CLI to restore to an alternate server. To do this, you'll need to run the following:

C:\Program Files\Quest Software\NetVault Backup\util>nvsetcreate -setname restore1 -type RS -client "NVBU_Server" -plugin "File System" -saveset 447 -include "C:\netvault3" -restoretarget "SQL_Server_Prod"

Created set 'restore1'

Once the set is created, you can load it via the GUI and it does indeed have the other client targeted. However, you still need to use nvjobcreate to create the job via CLI and then nvjobstart to kick off the job. This will do the trick.

C:\Program Files\Quest Software\NetVault Backup\util>nvjobcreate -servername "NVBU_Server" -jobtitle testrestore -type restore -selectionsetname restore1

Submitting job...

Waiting for confirmation that job was submitted successfully....

Job successfully submitted!

job 'testrestore' has been assigned the job id '640'

C:\Program Files\Quest Software\NetVault Backup\util>nvjobstart -jobid 640

Submitting job...

Sent start job '640' request

Job started successfully

Help understanding how BMR works

I am fairly new to Netvault but have been asked , as part of a project, to investigate Bare Metal Recovery. We intend to use an old Windows server (probably 2003) to practice on. I wondered if anyone had any useful tips on how to use BMR and if there is any useful documentation out there which could help me to better understand how BMR works with Netvault. Thanks

Newbie - simple question about Netvault client/backup

Hello,

I've got a linux server running Netvault 8.2.2

I've installed the client on a  linux box.

When I click on the client from the server, it says:" No plugins available on client"

Basically there is a large amount of data on the client that I want to back up, and I want to schedule regular incremental and full backups. @500GB of data reside on the client.

It seems to me that the next step would be to install something like a Unix File system plugin, and then I should be able to back up my files. I don't have a support contract with Netvault, so I'm hoping they'll give me access to the plugin.

I've taken a good look at the Getting Started Guide and the Administrators guide but it's not entirely clear to me if this is all that needs to be done. Before I call Quest, am I missing anything? Should I ask for some other plugins?

Thanks,

Need help with a trigger event

We have a couple servers that are giving an error.  I saw this support article:  https://support.quest.com/Search/SolutionDetail.aspx?ID=SOL81422

I am looking at that and am new to NetVault.  When I look at the current schedule, it's setup to run on M, W, F at 8PM on a repeating schedule.  Does that mean I have to edit the whole job?  If so, is there a way to use a trigger option and have it run on the same schedule?  If so, what is the best recommended way?  We are running NetVault Backup 8.21 Build 10.

I don't have a test environment and appreciate any and all help.

  • Failed to mount the VM volumes
  • Failed to open the VM disk set

Transport mode is ndb.

Normally on NV Backup 8.53, I will have to check on each tape on Media Management windows to see if client A's backup on a certain date available on what tape.

How to I simplify this task?
