Hi,

I was wondering what the best media block and transfer buffer sizes should/could be on the SVTLs of my system.

System:                     Windows 2008 R2

Netvault Version:        8.6.1

VTL Size:                  15 TB

VTL System:             10 drives with 33 slots/tapes @ 400GB

Newbie - simple question about Netvault client/backup

Hello,

I've got a linux server running Netvault 8.2.2

I've installed the client on a  linux box.

When I click on the client from the server, it says:" No plugins available on client"

Basically there is a large amount of data on the client that I want to back up, and I want to schedule regular incremental and full backups. @500GB of data reside on the client.

It seems to me that the next step would be to install something like a Unix File system plugin, and then I should be able to back up my files. I don't have a support contract with Netvault, so I'm hoping they'll give me access to the plugin.

I've taken a good look at the Getting Started Guide and the Administrators guide but it's not entirely clear to me if this is all that needs to be done. Before I call Quest, am I missing anything? Should I ask for some other plugins?

Thanks,

Recently,I found a strange question on the NetVault Backup:Sometimes the Library was lose, and Backup Status:No Suitable Drive or Media Available.

jobs.jpg

lost.jpg

request.jpg

The log didn't have errors, just warning like that:No Suitable Drive or Media for job xx instance xx.The detail, you can see the attachment.

Somedays ago(for one year),every job was right to backup,I didn't know how to happen this problem.

Dose someone know the problem?

"Operation not supported by device" Error Messages?

$

Does anyone happen to have any information on the following error messages?

Failed to read data from a fork - Operation not supported by device

Failed to get list of extended attributes : Operation not supported by device

I'm trying to archive a few folders on an Xsan volume, but it only backs up ~100GB of ~2.5TB before 'completing with warnings' and listing thousands of files with the above messages (mostly the 'Failed to read data from a fork" variety).

As usual, it's impossible to find any documentation regarding these errors. Fwiw, the whole volume (40-45TB) is backed up monthly without these errors, and the folders I'm trying to archive are a subset of that backup that (usually) completes without issue.

If anyone has any insight into these errors, I'd appreciate any info.

Thank  you

NetVault 8.5.3Getting Tapes to show as Online in Media List

Hello All,

I'm currently running into a situation where I'm trying to restore a file system with NetVault 8.5.3 installed on Mac OS X 10.6.8.  The tape library I'm currently running is a Tandberg Magnum 2x24.  When I go to the media list for the restore job, all the tapes that I need are listed there.  However, they all show as offline.  I am not able to bring those tapes to go online by any means known to mean.  I'm under the impression that all these tapes need to be online in order for the restore to take place.  Also to note, for whatever reason, I am not able to control the robotic arm of the Tandberg library through the software.  I'm loading all the tapes manually into the drive with the panel interface on the Tandberg itself.  The tapes are all labeled with barcodes.  In the device management all tapes show up in the library as UNKNOWN with the barcode number next to it in parenthesis (NFW***).  I can provide screenshots if you think it would give you a better idea of my dilema.  I thank you all in the community in advance for any input you may provide.

Thanks!

NVBU CLI Restore to an Alternate Server

Recently a NetVault Backup user asked us how to use the CLI to restore to an alternate server. To do this, you'll need to run the following:

C:\Program Files\Quest Software\NetVault Backup\util>nvsetcreate -setname restore1 -type RS -client "NVBU_Server" -plugin "File System" -saveset 447 -include "C:\netvault3" -restoretarget "SQL_Server_Prod"

Created set 'restore1'

Once the set is created, you can load it via the GUI and it does indeed have the other client targeted. However, you still need to use nvjobcreate to create the job via CLI and then nvjobstart to kick off the job. This will do the trick.

C:\Program Files\Quest Software\NetVault Backup\util>nvjobcreate -servername "NVBU_Server" -jobtitle testrestore -type restore -selectionsetname restore1

Submitting job...

Waiting for confirmation that job was submitted successfully....

Job successfully submitted!

job 'testrestore' has been assigned the job id '640'

C:\Program Files\Quest Software\NetVault Backup\util>nvjobstart -jobid 640

Submitting job...

Sent start job '640' request

Job started successfully

Migrating from tape backups to removable storage

Hi

We have as of today about 20 clients and we are running Netvault 8.6.1. Our tape library is about to be replaced by removable storage. Today we run DataCopy to archive-tapes that we move out of the building once a month and once every year we store a set of tapes in a bank vault. That works great but since our tape library is an old LTO-3 we are planning to create the same scenario using removable storage instead of tapes.

I have some questions regarding this:

  • Is it a good idea, do you know of any better way to solve the need for protecting the backups? We do have access to an offsite serverroom.
  • I have found the "Backup Implementation Guide Removable Storage", but ius there any other guides that I might have missed?
  • Can you recommend some hardware for the external drives? It is critical data that we need to store in a safe way.

We have volume based licensing so we access to basically all plugins for NetVault.

Thanks in advance!

E-mail notification Subject line provide ability to include Job Title

It doens't seem to make much sense for the email to list the backup server name in the subject field and not the job title.  This used to be a customizable option but has since been removed.  Please add this functionality back.

Job E-Mail Notification - Information level

Dear comminity,

we are using Job E-Mail Notification in NetVault. Is there a possibility to extend the level of information provided by the E-Mail Notfication Service?

Job completed with warnings isn´t very much. It would be helpful to get information about the warnings in the E-Mail then to need to look inside the Software.

Is that possible?

Kind regards

Tape Buffer Values

Hi

I'm running LTO3 drives off a Sun V125, 64bit Solaris 9 with 1GB memory.

Most of my backups are ndmp off a NetApp Filer.

I'm trying to work out whether I need to change server buffer sizes, or device Media block or transfer buffer size to get the optimum performance.  The manuals hint that you should make changes, but I can't find anywhere to say what to....

If anyone has any suggestions of help, I'd be grateful

Alan

[Netvault 8.6.1] Pause in pre/post scripts

Hi all...

My Netvault server is a Windows 2k8 R2 and I can't make a pause in my scripts...

I have tried this in a pre-script :

c:

echo toto > C:\toto.txt

time /t  >> C:\toto.txt

timeout /T 120

time /t  >> C:\toto.txt

echo toto2 >> C:\toto.txt

And the timeout doesn't make an error but doesn't work !!

Have you some ideas ?

I just need to run a cmd which has to launch a command and then must wait for around 1 minute before exiting...

Thanks in advance.

Performance Tuning Suggestions

I was wondering if anyone had any suggested Configurator or Drive settings for Netvault to increase performance of a Server with 20+ million small text files on it and it is taking about 30 hours to backup 600 GB. The server is using SAN storage. I currently dont have the server configured as a smart client, but I do have another similar server that is, and it doesnt perform much better when it comes to a large amount of small files (it is speedy on large databases and such tho)

thanks
