Hello All,

I am a current NetBackup user and I am looking into other products.  I am hoping to get some feedback from current Netvault users as to what they think of NetVault. The problem I have with NetBackup is that it is unintuitive and overly complex for our needs.  For example, having to use the CLI to fix many issues (including simple tasks) is a major drawback to Netbackup in my opinion.  If I only managed DR this might be OK (although I would still look for something better), but I need something that is more streamlined and easier to use.  The only reason Netbackup was chosen as our backup product was due to it's support of Oracle RAC

Things I am primarily focused on are ease of use and implementation.

If anyone has used Netbackup in the past and can offer a direct comparison that would be great, otherwise what do you think of Netvault in general?

I'm using Netvault smartdisk for backing up data onto a filesystem on a storage product. I ve mounted the filesystem through CIFS on my Windows machine where Netvault has been installed.

I have to take simulatneous backups on 4 such filesystems.

But to my knowledge, we can make only 1 Smartdisk device using Netvault Device Management . Is it correct?

After adding smartdisk we go to its properties and define pool name. This pool name can also be given only once??

I just want to know is it possible to have 4 smartdisks configured for 4 filesystems?

Or configure 4 devices on 1 smartdisk and run backups on them simultaneously?

I was wondering if anyone had any suggested Configurator or Drive settings for Netvault to increase performance of a Server with 20+ million small text files on it and it is taking about 30 hours to backup 600 GB. The server is using SAN storage. I currently dont have the server configured as a smart client, but I do have another similar server that is, and it doesnt perform much better when it comes to a large amount of small files (it is speedy on large databases and such tho)

how come when a DataDomain appliance stated on backup server as 100% full but backup can still be done on it?

creating a new VTL media would not affect this?

I'm having a problem with our system when Netvault attempts to backup a client using the netvault 'datachannel'  (not using NFS,  CIFS or local drives).    Within a few seconds of a client job starting the network goes away for the entire machine.    The link indicates it is up/up,  but all network sessions drop,  no new ones can be established untill you ifdown/up the interface.   I can run backups all day long over NFS or CIFS (via UNC paths) without any network related issues.

I can reproduce this issue fairly consistantly,  8/10 times,  some times it fails in under a minute,  other times it may run for an hour or so then fail.    just create a job which is going to use netvaults internal method to transfer data over the network,  then run that job.  within 30 seconds we lose connectivity to the backup server.  dmesg output indicates nothing nor are there any logs created under /var/log indicating what the problem might be.  compairing the kernel log output pre and post show no differences.   The network switch which this machine is plugged into doesn't indicate any issues either.    no errors on the interface,  and as far as the switch is concerned it belives the host interface to be up/up as well.

we are using Intel 82599EB 10 gig adapter,  debian 6 linux with kernel 2.6.32-5 amd,  netvault 9.   The clients which cause this issue are windows clients (windows 7/8 and windows server 2008r2 / 2012).  

does this sound like a familar issue?  I went threw the read me and the version of debian we are using is supported,  and I was unable to find and documents referencing the intel 10 gig card..

These jobs are no larger or smaller than the ones we do over NFS/CIFS,  clients can be 1 gig or 10 gig,  behaviour remians the same.

I did a packet capture but it doesn't seem to indicate anything of use,  all of a suddent the flow stops,  no tear down.  I can provide if intrested.

I tried another distro wtih an older kernel (2.6.27 i think it was),  same result.   

I have downloaded,  built and installed the newest driver intel has for this card without change as well.

It is possible to reallocate VM to alternate target ESXi when this alternate ESXi host is attached to vCenter? I found somwhere that I have to disassociate this host, but I don´t want to do it.

Recently a NetVault Backup user asked us how to use the CLI to restore to an alternate server. To do this, you'll need to run the following:

C:\Program Files\Quest Software\NetVault Backup\util>nvsetcreate -setname restore1 -type RS -client "NVBU_Server" -plugin "File System" -saveset 447 -include "C:\netvault3" -restoretarget "SQL_Server_Prod"

Created set 'restore1'

Once the set is created, you can load it via the GUI and it does indeed have the other client targeted. However, you still need to use nvjobcreate to create the job via CLI and then nvjobstart to kick off the job. This will do the trick.

I have migrated my backup server and I have now some errors with these scripts..

But they were all operationnal before...

I think these errors come from the usage of double quotes (")...

Example of a script (yes I use Unix commands under Crosoft !!!) :

clui.cmd show jobs SnapTreso instances -c | grep SnapTreso | grep PAUSED | cut -d"," -f1 > C:\temp\InstanceSnapTreso.txt

The second line works and the first line works if I suppress the "cut" command... So how can I do to be able to use my cut command ?

This script runs well if I launch it directly...

I have this one server that has been acting up.  I was informed that we can install Netvault as a last ditch effort and reinstall it, then add the client in the Client Management area, I get a message that says:

"Client 'servername' is not responding.  NetVault must be active before the client may be added.

The client service is running on both client and server side.  i can ping the server as well.  When I go into the "Show Details", I get this:

and go through all the steps.

- the server and client can ping each other

- both server and client can telnet to each other

- firewall has been disable

- both forward and reverse lookup are working for server and client

but i'm still unable to add client to my netvault server

So, i configure Oracle APM for a Rman backup and i cant catch all tablespaces, so i assume then setup is fine.

So far the only thing that does not seem to be very intuitve with Netvault is building reports.  Hopefully this will be made simpler in future releases.

Anyway, we rotate some of our tapes on a 14 day schedule.  I would like to generate a report that shows all tape written between 10 and 14 days before the current date (or between X and Y number of days).

I've created a report that shows tapes that were written 14 days (or X days) before the current date but that gives me all the tapes every written longer ago than 14 days.  I need to narrow it to a window of days.

I would also like to be able to generate a report based on the "Offisite Location" field.  Like, all tapes that have an "Offsite Location" that begins with "Safe."

Any thoughts/help will be greatly appreciated.

I'm new to NetVault Backup. I need information about license Creation for the products and plugins we purchased.

We have got NVBU server running on Windows 2012 Server which is also an Additional domain controller. We need to create and apply the license for MS SQL Server Ent. Ed. Cluster Plugin, While License Key creation which Machine ID and Hostname Should i provide?.(Backup server Machine ID or Cluster Nodes NVBU Machine ID). Also SQL Cluster is running in active-active mode with two different Instances on two cluster nodes.

Also for Share point Ent. Ed plugin which Machine ID and Machine name (NVBU Backup Server or MS Share Point Server)should be provided for creation of License Key?. Share Point Application is also running in two different nodes.

Any help would be appreciated.

I am interested in creating some more custom reports, but need some guidance.

Can someone point me to a list of Field Values and their proper operands and values?

For instance, I figured out (by looking at another report) that “Date Written (Date) operand of <= could be a value of  “ now-14DA”

But how can I figure out what operands are available and what values can be used?  The possible values are really what is confusing.

There seems to be no list anywhere and the Admin guide has general settings but no specifics as to values.

We have ordered Netvault License for both DC and DR in a single order.

We have received only one Server License Number, that is being used for Datacenter Netvault Backup.

How to create license key for DR site Netvault backup with same Server License Number.

Upon searching the boards I don't know if this is a unique problem. I am new IT admin at a company that has Linux servers with NetVault backup running RH9. I am NOT a linux person and am trying to determine what is going on.

When I attempt to access the nvgui on our client machine (a linux running CentOS6), it typically opens the NVBU Console. For some reason, this week it is not doing so. I click on the icon, enter the password for our bakup server, and......... nothing.

Again, I am not a linux person and I have not been given any resources as to how this NetVault has been installed or configured. (My predicessor took those secrets with him when he was fired).

Is this a NetVault problem or a Linux issue?
