Newbie - simple question about Netvault client/backup

Hello,

I've got a linux server running Netvault 8.2.2

I've installed the client on a  linux box.

When I click on the client from the server, it says:" No plugins available on client"

Basically there is a large amount of data on the client that I want to back up, and I want to schedule regular incremental and full backups. @500GB of data reside on the client.

It seems to me that the next step would be to install something like a Unix File system plugin, and then I should be able to back up my files. I don't have a support contract with Netvault, so I'm hoping they'll give me access to the plugin.

I've taken a good look at the Getting Started Guide and the Administrators guide but it's not entirely clear to me if this is all that needs to be done. Before I call Quest, am I missing anything? Should I ask for some other plugins?

Thanks,

Error message when adding client - "Client is not responding. NetVault must be active before the client may be added."

VMWare Plugin sudden performance degradation

As of Thursday of last week, peak Xfer rates on the backups using VMWare Plugin 2.1.80 have gone from 40Mb per second to 5 Mb per second.

I have tried all the things I can thing of, including:

-moving VM to another Hypervisor

-uninstalling, rebooting, reinstalling VMWare plugin

-recreating job in NV console

-switching target tape drive

-changing target to disk (VTL)

-changing target to disk (SmartDisk)

Nothing has changed in my VMWare environment, nor has anything changed in my NetVault Backup setup

(I am currently on NV 8.5.2 and VMWare ESXi 4.1.0)

Anyone ran into something like this?

It's driving me crazy since it now takes 14 hours to back up a 250Gb server and my nightly backup window is only 12 hours.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!!!

NetVault with vRanger deduplicaiton times

I've recently implemented a NVSD for vRanger repository in my environment with the following spec's and looking for advise on how to improve the times moving data from Staging to Chunk - currently the staging are is being consumed at a higher rate than the deduplication process is taking.

Here's a brief overview of my environment:

vRanger Servers

2 x Dell R710, 24GB RAM, Dual Westmere X5620 (8 Core + hyperthreaded) with 8GB Fiber, 2 x 1GB NICs for LAN backups (Link Aggrogate Group - for 2GB speed) and 2 x 1GB NICs for LAN backups (Link Aggrogate Group - for 2GB speed) a 2GB LAG'ed NICs over a private backup network to the NVSD server

Backups are performed over FC where possible with LAN as a backup interface using a 14 day retention period with a full every 6 days.

NVSD for vRanger Server

Dell R710, 24GB RAM, Dual Westmere X5620 (8 Core + hyperthreaded) with 2GB LAG'ed NICs on a private backup network.  Staging disc is RAID10, with two LUNs presented as staging (10.9TB and a 12.7TB).  Chunk store is RAID5 14.5TB LUN, all storage is SAS6 direct attached Dell MD3200/MD1200 7.2K SATA disc

Staging 12.7TB over 14 Spindles

Staging 10.9TB over 12 Spindles

Chunk 14.5TB over  9 Spindles

Our ESX Environment

32 ESX servers hosting 450 VM's running in a primerily ESXi5 environment with some small ESX4.1 & ESXi4.1 clusters

Current injest of a full backup is around 8TB with incrementals around 2TB a day incremental.

Changes that have been made from the default NVSD configuration is as follows:

Deduplicators Active = 24     (default=4)

Dedplication Activity Cap = 16 (per repository)

In an attempt to get our staging store freed of some space Garbage Collection has been disabled (as takes presidences over deduplication) and Deduplication Compression has been turned off (more to seeif compression has a big impact on the process or not)

I've attached the current config and NVSD stats.

A second NVSD licese has been purchased and begrudgingly, have available hardware that could host a second NVSD server as fearing we maybe over taxing the environment.

Any advise on how to improve DeDupe timesor how to improve the performance of my NVSD for vRanger implementation would be appreciated

Performance Tuning Suggestions

I was wondering if anyone had any suggested Configurator or Drive settings for Netvault to increase performance of a Server with 20+ million small text files on it and it is taking about 30 hours to backup 600 GB. The server is using SAN storage. I currently dont have the server configured as a smart client, but I do have another similar server that is, and it doesnt perform much better when it comes to a large amount of small files (it is speedy on large databases and such tho)

thanks

Tape Buffer Values

Hi

I'm running LTO3 drives off a Sun V125, 64bit Solaris 9 with 1GB memory.

Most of my backups are ndmp off a NetApp Filer.

I'm trying to work out whether I need to change server buffer sizes, or device Media block or transfer buffer size to get the optimum performance.  The manuals hint that you should make changes, but I can't find anywhere to say what to....

If anyone has any suggestions of help, I'd be grateful

Alan

I have this one server that has been acting up.  I was informed that we can install Netvault as a last ditch effort and reinstall it, then add the client in the Client Management area, I get a message that says:

"Client 'servername' is not responding.  NetVault must be active before the client may be added.

The client service is running on both client and server side.  i can ping the server as well.  When I go into the "Show Details", I get this:

servername

Type = winnt

UDP Fragment Size = 1400

Description =

Server = FALSE

NVVersion = 8021

NVBuildLevel = 10

Preferred Address = 169.254.2.195

Fixed entry = false

The 169 IPs are disturbing me.  What does this mean?

Recovery of a blanked tape

Hallo a customer blanked a tape of a full backup. Exists a system to recover the data on the tape? Either using the cli or the gui.

I know that the blank operation deletes the index of the tape, but is possible to read all the tape in order to recover all the data even without the index?

Thanks, Pietro.

How can I see what backups take up the most space?

I'm curious to see which backups are using the most resources.  I have theories on which ones that may be doing this, but without seeing a definite answer, I wouldn't be sure.

How do I look in NetVault and see what servers take up the most space/use the most resources for storage?

Physical Library offline after firmware upgrade on tape library

We have a Quest Scalar i2000 physical tape library.  We upgraded the firmware on it and after all was said and done, everything looked good.  When I jump into our NetVault server, all of the virtual drives look fine, but the physical Scalar library shows "offline", then it shows "unavailable".  After I tried to restart the library, it just showed "offline".  Everything on the hardware side/tape library side looks good according to the vendor.  I'm looking at the NetVault side and wanted to know if I'm missing something.

Thank you in advance.

[Netvault 8.6.1] Pause in pre/post scripts

Hi all...

My Netvault server is a Windows 2k8 R2 and I can't make a pause in my scripts...

I have tried this in a pre-script :

c:

echo toto > C:\toto.txt

time /t  >> C:\toto.txt

timeout /T 120

time /t  >> C:\toto.txt

echo toto2 >> C:\toto.txt

And the timeout doesn't make an error but doesn't work !!

Have you some ideas ?

I just need to run a cmd which has to launch a command and then must wait for around 1 minute before exiting...

Thanks in advance.

NVFR: change IP of bound interface

Hello,

i have a problem with bond interfaces added by NVFR. I have 2 subnet in 192.168.0 and 192.168.1, and my bond0 take IP 192.168.1.9 at start, so i cannot access to my second subnet and protect computers.

I try to edit the ifcfg-bond0 and nvfr_server.conf file, but each time i restart the network service, changes are dismissed...

Someone know how to make my modification persistent ?

Thx a lot

Need feedback on Netvault

$

Hello All,

I am a current NetBackup user and I am looking into other products.  I am hoping to get some feedback from current Netvault users as to what they think of NetVault. The problem I have with NetBackup is that it is unintuitive and overly complex for our needs.  For example, having to use the CLI to fix many issues (including simple tasks) is a major drawback to Netbackup in my opinion.  If I only managed DR this might be OK (although I would still look for something better), but I need something that is more streamlined and easier to use.  The only reason Netbackup was chosen as our backup product was due to it's support of Oracle RAC

Things I am primarily focused on are ease of use and implementation.

If anyone has used Netbackup in the past and can offer a direct comparison that would be great, otherwise what do you think of Netvault in general?

thanks
